Brother of E-Nose

 

This is about not your Grandma's electronic nose, but other versions that have been showing up:

Most electronic noses work electrochemically, but this one is biomimetic, so that's new.

"In the future, with the development of suitable bio-compatible materials, we hope that the biomimetic olfactory chip can also be placed on the human body to allow us to smell an odor that normally cannot be smelled. It can also monitor the abnormalities in volatile organic molecules in our breath and emitted by our skin, to warn us on potential diseases, reaching further potential of biomimetic engineering," said Prof. Fan.

Combining human olfactory receptors with artificial organic synapses and a neural network to sniff out cancer

The device has three parts. a nanodisk containing modified human olfactory receptors grown using E. coli bacteria, a device that simulates neural synapses, and an artificial neural network trained on four specific fatty acids that are known to be present in breath samples of people with certain types of gastric cancers.

The research team plans to continue their work by adding more receptors.

Artificial 'nose' can sniff out damaged fruit and spoiled meat

Ah yes - The Antenna Nose:

"Other electronic noses can have several hundred sensors, often each coated with different materials. This makes them both very power-intensive to operate and expensive to manufacture. They also entail high material consumption. In contrast, the antenna sensor consists of only one antenna with one type of coating."

The antenna transmits radio signals at a range of different frequencies into the surroundings. It then analyzes how they are reflected back. The way the signals behave changes based on the gases present, and because the antenna transmits signals at multiple frequencies, the changes create unique patterns that can be linked to specific volatile organic compounds - even isomer compounds that "look" very similar to even the most sophisticated E-noses.

Tiny electronic nose rivals animal scent detection

They measure the timing and frequency of odor bursts in highly chaotic air movements of odor plumes to guess the size and spread of the odor plume.

We found it could accurately identify odors in bursts as short as 50 milliseconds. Even more, it could decode patterns between odors switching up to 40 times per second, which is similar to what mice can do when they perform source-separation tasks. This means our device can "smell" at speeds that match those of animals.

They used metal-oxide gas sensors as well as temperature and humidity sensors, improved with high-end electronics and custom-designed algorithms that can sample and control these sensors fast and precisely. 

"We also discovered that rapidly switching the temperature of the sensors back and forth between 150°C and 400°C about 20 times per second produced quick, distinctive data patterns that made it easier to identify specific smells. This approach allowed our device to pick up odors with remarkable speed and accuracy."

Nanopore-based 'artificial tongue' can determine chemical makeup of alcoholic drinks

"A single-molecule sensor for rapid analysis of alcoholic beverages" uses a mycobacterium modified with a pore just a few nanometers in diameter.

Odor Radar and Situational Awareness


Smell significantly enhances sense of realism in virtual reality, researchers find

While fighting zombies in survival mode, smell is likely the last thing on your mind. But our research has shown that the sense least associated with virtual reality actually holds the key to a more immersive experience. Participants in our study felt that smell gave them a greater sense of really "being there" in the virtual environment.

Surely a sweet-smelling game like Animal Crossing would be a better candidate for testing this theory? Well, as it turns out, bad smells may enhance the VR experience much more than good smells. 

Yes, and in fact, bad smells are about to do a lot more than good smells. Whether it's monitoring isoprene in the workplace to enforce occupational mental health regulations (science fiction I know, but it has to start somewhere), or using an odor alert system at work that gets more intense as your inbox gets too full, so you don't have to look or listen to it, we will be using odors in new ways in our everyday lives. It's the last sense to be digitized, to enter the interconnected datasphere, but universal odor machines and the coming chemosensor revolution are just two examples of why the time is coming for us to recognize the untapped potential of this new channel for communication.

Little Signals: A Google multi-object system to deliver notifications in a gentler manner

Only a few days after this post was published, I'm updating it with a news article from engineers at Google tells us there are other people thinking about how to communicate to users in new ways. 

Designed to deliver notifications to users in a gentler manner than current systems.

One such device is called simply Air, and it sends notifications via puffs of air, similar, Google says, to the slight movement of leaves on a plant as they rustle in response to a slight breeze. Another is called Button—it grows as it fills with information, such as messages piling up in an email folder. Twisting it one way reveals more details, while twisting the other way reveals fewer details. There is also a device called Movement—it has seven pegs that are lined up and which rise and fall. It is meant to convey timer or calendar notifications.

Surprise Surprise


It's a problem for many a fragrance-wearer – you trial and trial vial by vial until you find that one scent that is totally you. It smells great in the beginning, the middle, and at the distant end of the day. You even get compliments when you wear it.

But then, this cruel phenomenon of odor detection takes over. It's called nose fatigue, and the way it works is that the more you smell something, the less you smell it. It's the reason Febreeze didn't work in its first instantiation as a deodorizer (people can't smell when their own house needs deodorizing) and it's the reason people tend to bath themselves in their own perfume.

It does make sense, and is similar to the fact that you don't always hear your refrigerator buzzing, or a clock ticking (do people still have ticking clocks in their house anymore?). You also don't see the mess of bills that has all but hidden your kitchen table (do people still get paper bills?).

It's all about bandwidth, a word which has expanded its definition to now refer to "attention span." We don't have the bandwidth to notice every stimulus that wiggles our receptors.

But there is a product that aims to sidestep this problem. They devised a snappy marketing product at last year's Consumer Electronics Show in the form of an advent calendar. The idea is to first offer you a bunch of scents, to establish a preference profile. That's the 25 Days of Christmas part.

In this video, a reporter from the BBC samples the advent calendar. It's ironic how he smells all two-dozen scent tabs at once to gauge his "scent profile," because that generates a lot of nose-noise, making it hard to gauge preference. Hence the clever marketing approach to package it as an advent calendar, which is meant to spread the sniffs out over many days.
